What to Do If You Lose Your ID Card in BiH — Steps and Procedures
The ID card is the most important document
Losing your ID card is a serious matter as it's your primary identification document. Without it, you can't handle almost any administrative task. Here's what you need to do.
Step 1: Report the loss to police
Immediately go to the nearest police station and report the loss of your ID card. This is important for two reasons:
- You prevent potential misuse of your data
- You get a loss confirmation that is necessary for issuing a new one
The police will record the loss in the system, which automatically invalidates the old ID card.
Step 2: Prepare documentation
To obtain a new ID card, you need:
- Loss confirmation from the police
- Birth certificate extract (not older than 6 months)
- Citizenship certificate (not older than 6 months)
- Residence registration (CIPS form)
- Old ID card (if damaged, not lost)
Step 3: Visit the CIPS center
With all documentation, visit the CIPS center according to your place of residence. On the spot, you will:
- Fill out the application for issuing an ID card
- Provide biometric data (photo, fingerprints, signature)
- Pay the fee (approximately 18 BAM in FBiH, similar in RS)
Step 4: Collection
A new ID card is produced within 15-30 days. You pick it up in person at the CIPS center where you submitted the application.
Important for minors
If an ID card is lost for a minor, the application is submitted by a parent or legal guardian with their own ID card and required documentation for the child.
Prevention
- Photograph both sides of your ID card and save digitally
- Never carry your ID card together with all other documents
- Consider a protective case that attaches to your bag
