Lost Driver's License — How to Get a New One Fast
Lost your license — don't drive without it
Driving without a driver's license is an offense punishable by a fine. That's why it's important to start the process of getting a new one as soon as possible.
Step 1: Report the loss
You need to report the loss of your driver's license at the nearest police station. The police will issue you a confirmation of the reported loss, which temporarily serves as proof that you've initiated the process.
Step 2: Prepare documentation
To obtain a duplicate driver's license, you need:
- ID card (valid)
- Confirmation of reported loss from the police
- Medical certificate (in some cases, depending on the age of the previous license)
- Photo (usually taken on-site at CIPS)
- Fee payment for issuing a duplicate
Step 3: Submit the application
Submit the application for a duplicate at the CIPS center (Center for Issuing Travel and Identification Documents) according to your place of residence.
The fee for issuing a duplicate driver's license is approximately 30-50 BAM, depending on the entity.
Step 4: Collection
A new driver's license is usually produced within 10-15 working days. In urgent cases, you can request an expedited procedure for an additional fee.
Important notes
- If the license was stolen, make sure to state this in the report — the procedure is the same, but police keep records
- The duplicate has the same validity period as the original license
- If your license has expired, you'll need to go through the renewal procedure which includes a medical examination
- While waiting for your new license, do not drive — the loss confirmation is not a substitute for a driver's license
Digital copy for the future
We recommend photographing your driver's license and saving the image in a safe place (email, cloud storage). It won't replace the physical document, but it will speed up the process if loss occurs again.
