Lost Backpack with Laptop — Emergency Steps to Protect Your Data

Lost backpack with laptop — a double loss

Losing a backpack with a laptop is particularly stressful because it's two categories of loss: material loss (the device is worth hundreds of BAM) and potential data loss (documents, passwords, private files). Here's what to do, in order.

Step 1: Remotely secure the laptop immediately

This is priority number one:

  • Windows: Go to account.microsoft.com/devices, find your device, and activate Find My Device. You can lock it and leave a contact message.
  • Mac: Go to iCloud.com/find, select the Mac, and activate Lost Mode. The laptop locks and displays your message.
  • Prey App / LoJack: If you had tracking software installed, log in and start tracking.

If you can't locate the device, consider remotely wiping data — this is a drastic step, but can protect sensitive information.

Step 2: Change passwords immediately

From another device, immediately change:

  • Microsoft or Apple account password
  • Email password (Gmail, Outlook)
  • Banking app passwords
  • If you use a password manager (LastPass, 1Password) — change the master password too

Step 3: Report the loss/theft to police

Go to the police station with:

  • Laptop serial number (on the bottom of the device or on the box)
  • Description of the backpack (brand, color, contents)
  • Receipt/proof of purchase

The police report is required for any insurance claim.

Step 4: Contact your insurance company

If you have insurance:

  • Check the policy — many home insurance policies cover portable electronics
  • Submit the police report and proof of purchase
  • The reporting deadline is usually 24-48 hours from the loss

Step 5: Post an ad on Nadjime.ba

Describe the backpack in detail — brand, color, any logos, and mention that a laptop (model) was inside. Specific details increase the chance that the finder will recognize your backpack.

Step 6: Search the scene of the loss

Contact:

  • The café, restaurant, or transport where you last had your backpack
  • Information desk at a shopping mall or similar venue
  • Taxi driver or transport operator (public transport)

Prevention for the future

  • Install Prey, Absolute, or LoJack on the laptop immediately
  • Use encryption (BitLocker on Windows, FileVault on Mac)
  • Regularly make backups to cloud or external drive
  • Put an AirTag or Tile in your backpack
  • Write down your laptop's serial number in a safe place
