Lost or Stolen Bicycle — What to Do Immediately

Bicycle gone — don't delay your reaction

Losing a bicycle, especially an expensive or electric one, is a frustrating experience. But a quick response dramatically increases your chances of getting it back. Here is what to do immediately.

1. Check whether the bicycle was moved

Before reporting the loss, check the following:

  • Whether municipal services moved the bicycle due to improper parking
  • Whether a family member or colleague moved it
  • Nearby parking zones and building entrances

2. File a police report

If the bicycle has truly disappeared, go to the nearest police station right away. For the report you will need:

  • Proof of ownership — a purchase receipt or the serial number
  • A photo of the bicycle, if you have one
  • The exact location and timeframe of the loss

The serial number is usually found beneath the bottom bracket shell. Check your purchase receipt if you did not write it down earlier.

A police report is required for any insurance claim, and it also helps if the police later recover the bicycle.

3. Post an ad on Nadjime.ba

Right after filing the report, post an ad on Nadjime.ba. In the description, include:

  • The make, model, and color of the bicycle
  • Distinctive features — scratches, stickers, non-standard parts
  • The location where the bicycle was last parked
  • The serial number, if you know it

Your ad is automatically shared on social media, widening the circle of people searching for it. Nadjime.ba was created precisely to connect people who have lost something with those who have found it — put the community to work for you.

4. Search online marketplaces

Thieves often try to sell stolen bicycles quickly on local platforms. Check regularly:

  • OLX.ba and Njuškalo
  • Facebook Marketplace
  • Local Facebook buy-and-sell groups

If you find an ad matching your bicycle, do not contact the seller yourself — notify the police immediately and provide them with the link.

5. Alert the local community

Share the ad in local WhatsApp groups, neighbourhood groups, and on social media. Stolen bicycles most often turn up for sale in the same or a neighbouring district. Also contact nearby bicycle repair shops — thieves sometimes bring stolen bikes in for servicing or resale.

6. Notify your insurer

If you have bicycle insurance (as a standalone policy or part of home insurance), report the theft as soon as possible. You will usually need to provide:

  • The police report
  • Proof of ownership and purchase value
  • Photos of the bicycle

Tips for the future

  • Always photograph your bicycle and write down the serial number somewhere safe
  • Use a quality U-lock or chain lock of at least 10 mm, secured through both the frame and the wheel
  • Park in well-lit, busy locations
  • Consider a GPS tracker hidden in the handlebar or seat post
  • If you have an e-bike, activate app-based protection and GPS tracking if available
