Lost Your Car Keys — What Are Your Options

Lost Your Car Keys — What Are Your Options

Car keys are gone — now what?

Losing your car keys can completely disrupt your day. But before you start panicking, know that there are several options for resolving this situation.

1. Search systematically

First of all, do a systematic search. Check all pockets, bags, drawers, under pillows, and between seats. Keys are most often lost in places where you leave them daily.

If you were at a café, restaurant, or shop, call and ask if someone found keys.

2. Post an ad on Nadjime.ba

Post an ad for your lost keys on Nadjime.ba. Describe the keychain, number of keys, and location of loss. Your ad is automatically shared on social media, dramatically increasing the chances of finding them.

3. Call a mechanic or locksmith

If you urgently need to get into your car:

  • A locksmith can open the car without damage (cost: 30-100 BAM)
  • Roadside assistance (BIHAMK) can help members
  • Never try to break into your own car — you might trigger the alarm or damage the lock

4. Making a duplicate

For making a new key, you have several options:

  • Regular mechanical key — a locksmith can make a copy for 20-50 BAM
  • Transponder key — an authorized dealer is needed, cost 150-500 BAM
  • Keyless/smart key — authorized dealer only, cost 300-1000+ BAM

To make a duplicate at an authorized dealer, you usually need: vehicle registration, ID card, and proof of ownership.

5. Spare key

If you have a spare key at home, this is the simplest solution. Ask someone to bring it to you or take a taxi home.

Prevention for the future

  • Always have a spare key in a safe place
  • Consider a Bluetooth tracker (Tile, AirTag) for your keys
  • Designate one permanent spot for keys at home
  • Use a carabiner or keychain that attaches to your bag or belt
